Swannanoa, NC (July 19, 1997)-Swannanoa Valley Presbyterian Church hosted the Stated Meeting of Western Carolina Presbytery. TE John C. Neville, Jr. was elected Moderator for one year.
The court approved the resignation of TE Sam McGinn as Assistant Pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Boone, NC. Approved were commission reports to Ordain and Install William C. Dages as Assistant Pastor at Story Memorial Presbyterian Church, Marion, NC; to Install TE Robert A. Wolf as Pastor at Westminster in Boone; and to Install TE Robert Guerrin as Assistant at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, Brevard, NC. Presbytery also approved the report of the Commission for Whiteside PCA, Cashiers, NC, and dismissed the commission with thanks.
Presbytery recognized the new mission work in Rutherford County, NC. TE Donald K. Caviness was received from Mississippi Valley Presbytery to serve as Organizing Pastor.
The court approved that Presbytery celebrate the Lord's Super at its Stated Meeting in November at Dillingham PCA, Barnardsville, NC. [According to Pastor John Jerguson of the Dillingham Church, he had stood up and objected to the administration of communion at this July meeting as there was no preaching of the Word.-Ed.]
TE R. Grady Love was received from North Georgia Presbytery to become the Pastor of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Brevard. This congregation was formed by former members of Grace Covenant Church.
Rev. Greg Selmon was received from the Southern Baptist Convention to become Assistant Pastor at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Asheville. TE Roger Smalling was received from the Presbytery of Quito, Ecuador, and will labor out of bounds with Mission to the World.
Mr. Michael Gant was received as a ministerial candidate.
(July 24, 1997)-At a called meeting, Western Carolina
Presbytery examined and received TE James W. Phillis of Heritage
Presbytery to become Pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hendersonville,
(September 16, 1997)-At a called meeting this evening, Western Carolina Presbytery examined and approved TE Kyle Brown to become Assistant Pastor of Arden (NC) Presbyterian Church. Mr. Brown's credentials were transferred from North Georgia Presbytery.
Presbytery approved TE Don Taws of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church to serve in an Assistant Pastor role at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Hendersonville, where he had recently served as interim supply. The court also approved Lic. Larry Jones to be Stated Supply for six months at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Waynesville.
It was announced at this meeting that TE Bill Laxton
had accepted the call to be Pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church,
Easley, SC. Dr. Laxton had served as Pastor of Trinity Presbyterian
Church, Asheville, for fifteen years.
